ELIZA TURNER

Subject Name: Eliza Turner (ca1798 – d?)

Researchers:  Sue Driscoll

Eliza Turner, an 83-year-old widow, occupation domestic servant, born in Ludlow, Salop (otherwise known as Shropshire), was listed as an inmate of the Guildford Union Workhouse on 3rd April 1881, the date of the Census (1).

Records of a number of Eliza Turners have been followed, but unfortunately none have conclusively led to the Eliza Turner in the Guildford Union that day.  The death certificate for an Eliza Turner who died age 87 in the Guildford Union on 22nd June 1884 stated that she was the widow of John Turner, a coach builder of Godalming, but nothing has been found to prove that she is the same Eliza Turner who was in the Workhouse three years earlier (2).

For the time being, therefore, the full story of Eliza Turner from Ludlow awaits discovery.
